Glad's House - a refuge for street children in Kenya

Many young people in Mombasa, Kenya, are so poor they live on the streets. Life for them is a bleak struggle for survival, where drugs, alcohol, and crime are often the only means of escape. They desperately need help.

Rainmakers' managing principal Cliff Ferguson has seen at first hand the plight of these youngsters when his daughter Victoria spent some time working as a volunteer with them. After this, doing nothing was simply not an option. We are now supporting a young charity 'Glad's House' which aims to help these street children return to a 'normal' way of life by raising money to establish a refuge in Mombasa - 'Glad's House.'

Locally we are 'partnering' with MOYO - The Mombasa Olympic Youth Organisation - which has been set up by former Kenyan Olympic athlete Fred (Bokey) Achola to give these young people that help.

He is using sport to reach this vulnerable group, to give them information, motivation and support to help them steer clear of drugs and crime and avoid HIV infection.

Glad's House and MOYO are very young charities which are still very much in their infancy. But we've seen what they have done so far and have been deeply impressed by their work.

We aim to support MOYO in its work by:

  • Providing sporting equipment and coaching

  • Helping to raise cash to set up a refuge for the street children (Glad's House)

  • Helping them raise funds to provide education and safe accommodation to enable youngsters to break free of the cycle of poverty they are trapped in.

Many of the successful leaders that we have worked with are people who recognise the value of giving something back, and we wanted to do likewise. If you'd like to help us help Glad's House and MOYO give these kids a sporting chance, please give Cliff Ferguson at Rainmakers a call on +44 (0) 208906 6738 or email gladshouse@hotmail.com
